Paris Saint Germain football director Leonardo revealed his club have made an offer to Napoli as they look to beat competition to sign Edinson Cavani.

Napoli club president Aurelio De Laurentiis has been very vocal all summer of the need for clubs to meet the player’s buy-out clause – set at a huge £63million.

Leonardo believes that the Parisian outfit have made an ‘interesting’ offer and he expects that negotiations can now begin.

The Ligue 1 outfit were eager to place a bid before any of their competition could lure him away with Real Madrid, Manchester City and Chelsea all looking to capture him.

Cavani has only just returned from his summer exploits with Uruguay in the Confederations Cup, where he helped his side to finish fourth.

The 26-year-old ended last term as the top scorer in Serie A with 29 goals to help the Azzurri finish runners-up, nine points adrift of Scudetto winners Juventus.

The former Palermo man is currently tied down until 2017 at the San Paolo Stadium but the Naples-based club are willing to let him go if the buy-out clause is met.

Leonardo said: “We presented an offer to [Napoli president Aurelio] De Laurentiis that I consider to be very interesting.

“We are pursuing negotiations. We remain in contact and there could be new developments over the next days.”
