After a period of hiatus since parting ways with Manchester United in November 2021, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer might be on the brink of making a comeback as he reportedly engages in talks with the Swedish Football Association for their vacant managerial position.

The 50-year-old Norwegian, renowned for his heroics as a player, including the unforgettable 1999 Champions League-winning goal, had his managerial journey at Manchester United cut short after a 4-1 defeat to Watford in November 2021. Despite the challenges faced at Old Trafford, Solskjaer’s managerial record showcases potential for further development, making him an intriguing prospect for new opportunities.

Recent reports from Fotbollskanalen suggest that discussions have taken place between Solskjaer and the Swedish FA regarding the possibility of him becoming the new head coach for the national team. This potential move comes as Sweden seeks a new leader following the resignation of Janne Andersson after the team’s Euro 2024 qualifying campaign.

Sweden’s failure to qualify for the European Championship for the first time since Euro 1996 has prompted a search for fresh leadership. Solskjaer, despite having no previous connections to Sweden, is said to be among the candidates considered for the role. Interestingly, the Swedish FA seems open to the idea of a non-Swede taking charge, possibly viewing Solskjaer’s Norwegian roots as an asset.

However, it’s worth noting that Solskjaer may not be the top choice for Sweden. Other candidates reportedly in contention include former Aston Villa defender Olof Mellberg, Australia women’s coach Tony Gustavsson, and Blackburn boss Jon Dahl Tomasson, Denmark’s joint all-time top scorer.

Solskjaer has, in the past, revealed turning down offers to return to football, including two from Saudi Arabia. Speaking about his approach to potential offers in September, he shared with The Athletic, “I’ve had offers. The latest two from Saudi Arabia. My best friend, who is also my agent, goes through the offers. If you’ve been the manager of Manchester United, you can have your own requirements for what you want to work with.”

As the discussions unfold between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the Swedish FA, it remains to be seen whether this could mark the next chapter in the experienced manager’s career. While challenges lie ahead, the potential to rejuvenate a national team could be the canvas on which Solskjaer paints his managerial comeback.
