Newcastle boss John Carver thinks he has been unfairly targeted by fans during games and has called for the club to take action.

Carver claims he was “abused” during Saturday’s 3-2 defeat by Swansea although his comments are unlikely to cut any ice with the Magpies faithful.

Newcastle lost their seventh straight Premier League at the weekend while their only win in their last 11 in the league came against Aston Villa at St James’ Park at the end of February.

The side’s form leaves them in 14th place in the table but just five points above the relegation zone and three of the six sides below them have a game in hand.

However, Carver, who succeeded Alan Pardew following his mid-season switch to Crystal Palace, claims the abuse aimed at his direction by supporters has now gone too far.

The 50-year-old said: “I am not going to stand out there and be abused during the game. The club has to do something about it.

“I knew it wouldn’t be easy. Sometimes it is quite difficult to stand in that technical area and be abused the way I was abused without any protection from the sidelines.

“They expect me to put the ball in the net, stop the headers going in, stop the opposition from scoring.

I can’t affect that. I can’t get on the end of the corner and head the ball clear which would have kept us one up at half-time. I can’t do that.”

Newcastle travel to in-form Leicester City on Saturday and are 4.00 to beat the Foxes (1.91) with the draw 3.40.

Nigel Pearson’s side entertain Chelsea on Wednesday night and a shock home win would see the East Midlanders close to within a point of Newcastle.
