Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino believes some of his side’s Premier League rivals have been “desperate” in the transfer market this summer.

Manchester United broke the world record transfer fee by spending £89million on Paul Pogba earlier this month, taking their combined spending during the off-season past the £140million mark, while Manchester City have spent a similar amount on eight new recruits.

Spurs, in contrast, have been relatively quiet during the transfer window, signing Victor Wanyama from Southampton and Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar for a combined £28million, and Pochettino insists he is happy with his squad.

“That shows when you spend a lot of money it is because you are not happy with your squad or your players and you are desperate to improve your squad,” he said.

“I am very happy with my players, I think it is very difficult to find better players than we have.”

The Argentine did admit that he would consider bringing in one or two new recruits before the end of the transfer window, but he insists he will only sign players who will strengthen the current squad.

He added: “We are open to adding one or two players or maybe no one. But if we have the possibility to sign a player that can improve us, we are very open.”

The north London club finished third in the Premier League last term, after challenging for the title for the majority of the campaign, and they are available at 9.50 to claim top-flight glory this season.
