Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel has turned down a move to Inter Milan and is poised to pen a new deal at Anfield.

Skrtel looked to be heading for the exit door after expressing his anger at Liverpool’s apparent “unacceptable” recent contract offer, but he has now worked things out with the club and is set to stay at Anfield.

“It’s unacceptable for me,” Skrtel was quoted as saying at the end of the season about the new deal.

“I think that contracts like this are offered to players who are much older than me or the player who had some health problems.”

Inter were keen to take Skrtel to the San Siro, but it would appear that Liverpool have changed the contract offer or Skrtel has had a change of heart.

“The interest from Inter was real,” the player’s agent Karol Csonto told the Daily Express. “But then the deal did not go ahead, there was contact made.

“The player had been thinking about his future and eventually opted to remain at Liverpool.

“As this time I can say that it is likely [he will sign a new contract].”

Meanwhile, Liverpool are closing in on a deal to sign Charlton teenager Joe Gomez, with the 18-year-old set to undergo a medical on Friday.

The Reds matched the £3.5million release clause in his contract at The Valley and he will complete a move in the coming days.

Liverpool will be hoping to mount a title challenge next season and are priced at 19.00 to be crowned Premier League champions next year.

They have already agreed deals to sign Danny Ings, James Milner and Adam Bogdan as they look to get their summer transfer business done early.
