Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has dropped his biggest hint yet that goalkeeper David de Gea may leave the club to join Real Madrid this summer.

The Spaniard is still to sign a new contract at Old Trafford even though the Red Devils have offered fresh terms in a bid to stop him leaving. The former Atletico Madrid stopper is being linked with a move back to Madrid to join Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Madrid currently have Iker Casillas and Keylor Navas on their books but the former is expected to move on at the end of the season.

The 24-year-old had massively improved since he first joined the Manchester outfit and Van Gaal has conceded that it may be his final season in England.

He told Sky Sports: “He is Spanish, he is Spanish international and now a Spanish club is coming.

“His girlfriend is Spanish, his father and mother come every week or every two weeks here. So it is difficult.”

Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford could have been De Gea’s last appearance in a United shirt after he got injured. De Gea was replaced by Victor Valdes in the 74th minute and although some fans expect him to leave, Van Gaal insists the club will put up a fight.

“With every individual transfer there is a process and there will be a process with David De Gea,” he said.

“David De Gea shall not leave us so easily because we are a great club and he wants to participate.”
