Manchester City boss Manuel Pellegrini has set his sights on a Capital One Cup win in an attempt to lay down a marker for the rest of the season.

The Citizens will take on Liverpool on Sunday at Wembley for the right to lift the first major trophy of the current campaign.

The last two winners of the competition have gone on to win the Premier League title, but Pellegrini is also determined to win the UEFA Champions League.

He will be leaving the club at the end of the season and the Chilean is determined to bow out in style.

Pellegrini won the League Cup back in 2014 after a 3-1 win over Sunderland and the former Malaga coach believes a win on Sunday would give the players a huge lift.

“I just hope to win the Capital One Cup on Sunday,” he said. “After that we have to return to the Premier League where we have to play for a possible 36 points.

“We are six points off the lead, that’s an important advantage but it’s not decisive. Everyone that knows the Premier League knows that anyone can beat anyone.

“I am sure all the teams in front of us will lose some points between now and the end of the season so we are not going to give up until the end.

“We are aiming to reach the final in the Champions League too – we made a big step towards the quarter-finals this week [with victory at Dynamo Kiev].”

City are the current favourites to win the Capital One Cup at 1.61, while Liverpool are priced at 2.20.
