Liverpool attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho is a doubt for Saturday’s Premier League clash with Southampton after reportedly undergoing a scan on a hamstring problem on Thursday.

The Brazil international has been in sparkling form for both club and country so far this season, scoring five goals and providing a further five assists in 11 league appearances for Liverpool.

The 24-year-old was also on target during Brazil’s recent World Cup qualifying success against Argentina, but it appears he has picked up a hamstring complaint whilst on international duty.

The former Inter Milan player returned from South America with team-mate Roberto Firmino on Wednesday, but he did not take part in training on Thursday after reportedly undergoing a scan on the problem.

Coutinho is now a major doubt for the Reds trip to St Mary’s Stadium, where they will be looking to secure a victory to preserve their place at the top of the Premier League standings.

Boss Jurgen Klopp was giving nothing away on Coutinho’s fitness ahead of Saturday’s match, although he did confirm that he sees the attacking midfielder’s long-term future at Anfield, following speculation linking the Brazilian with a move to Barcelona.

Klopp said: “We all hope and think his future is here at Liverpool.

What everybody forgets about Phil is that he is still very young. At 24, he has a long way to go and lot of space for improvement.”

Liverpool are priced at 2.20 to secure all three points on Saturday, while a Saints victory and the draw are both available at 3.50.
