Adam Lallana says the England players will be doing all they can to ensure Gareth Southgate gets the manager’s job on a permanent basis.

The 46-year-old was installed as interim boss following the departure of Sam Allardyce in September and oversaw last month’s 2-0 win over Malta and the goalless draw in Slovenia.

Southgate is currently preparing his troops for Friday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier with Scotland and also Tuesday’s friendly against Spain.

Following their disastrous last-16 elimination from Euro 2016, the Three Lions have appeared in a state of flux, a situation that has led to calls for stability to help the squad settle into qualifying for the global showpiece in Russia.

Liverpool playmaker Lallana admits the team are desperate to impress in their upcoming games, as he feels two strong results will help Southgate get the job on a permanent basis, something he believes will help the team in the long run.

“We are ready to fight for him [Southgate] in the matches,” Lallana told the BBC. “Hopefully he will do well enough to get the job on a permanent basis.

“It would be nice for Gareth and for us quite soon to know whether he’s going to get the job. You can build towards having a certain identity that your manager wants you to have.

“That’s what a manager is there for. I’m sure over the next few days the manager will be telling us what he wants for the Scotland and Spain.”

England are 1.36 to win on Friday at Wembley, the draw is 4.75 and Scotland are the 10.00 underdogs.
