Jose Mourinho was sent to the stands by referee Mark Clattenburg as his Manchester United side were held to a goalless draw with Burnley at Old Trafford.
The United boss felt aggrieved that Clattenburg failed to award his side a penalty late in the first half when Matteo Darmian went down under a challenge from Jon Flanagan.
The Portuguese was then forced to watch the second half from the stand after an apparent altercation with the officials during the interval.
Clattenburg turned away another penalty appeal from Darmian in the second half while Man United played the final quarter with ten men after Ander Herrera received a second booking.
Mourinho did not face the media afterwards, but his assistant Rui Faria confirmed they will await the referee’s report regarding the half-time incident.
“I don’t know what happened. It is not important what Jose said, what is important is what the referee writes in his report,” he said.
Burnley’s goalkeeper Tom Heaton – formerly a youth teamer at Man United – enjoyed a stellar afternoon as United failed to breakthrough despite taking 37 shots at goal. He produced world class stops from Jesse Lingard and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in either half.
The Swede missed a golden chance to win the game late on while sub Wayne Rooney also blazed over from 15 yards in stoppage time.
Despite the frustrations, Faria was unwilling to lay any blame on Clattenburg afterwards. “I think the referee did fantastic work. I won’t say more than this,” he added.
The win leaves Man United eight points adrift of pacesetting Man City, Liverpool and Arsenal after ten games. The Red Devils have won just once in their last six league games.
Manchester United are 2.50 to finish in top four this season while they are 26.00 to win the title.
