Rangers midfielder Joey Barton has revealed that he has already been questioning his decision to join the Ibrox side this summer.
Barton has been suspended by the Light Blues for three weeks after a row with teammate Andy Halliday and manager Mark Warburton in the wake of a 5-1 defeat to Old Firm rivals Celtic earlier this month.
His move from Burnley to the Scottish Premiership this summer was high profile and Barton appeared determined to make a success of his time in Scotland but he now concedes it may have been a bad decision.
Speaking to the press while publicising his new book, the 34-year-old said: “I needed another challenge, another experience, even though there have been days since then when I’ve thought: ‘Why? Why did I do that?'”
Barton was absent at the weekend as Rangers drew with Ross County, a result that meant Warburton’s side have won just two of their six top-flight games this season.
With the club enforcing a three-week ban on the player, Barton has been left with much to ponder. He says he will continue to be honest with his opinions and revealed that, with the benefit of hindsight, he would probably not choose to join Rangers.
“I’ve got to believe in Rangers even if it’s been much harder than I expected,” he added. “Reflecting on it, would I have made the same decision? Probably not.
I’ve even been honest with people about that. “There is an honesty that I am operating which means some people think I’m critiquing them.
But I know that in time it will turn out to be the right decision. As tough as it is, adversity brings out the best in you.” Rangers are 9.00 to win the Scottish Premiership this season.
