Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville believes the Red Devils will continue to improve under manager Louis van Gaal, as the new Premier League campaign draws closer.

The Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford last summer after completing his spell with the Holland national team and the signs are promising from his debut season.

Van Gaal guided United to fourth place in the Premier League and in doing so ensured the club returned to the Champions League after a one-year absence from Europe.

The Red Devils were certainly not afraid to splash the cash last summer, having brought in Angel Di Maria for a British record transfer fee along with Marcos Rojo, Luke Shaw, Ander Herrera, Daley Blind and Victor Valdes while Radamel Falcao arrived on loan.

At times there was frustration for the Old Trafford crowd after some less than inspiring performances but the strong end to the season has provided optimism around the club and, with the Memphis Depay arriving this summer, Neville believes the team will continue to progress under Van Gaal.

“Louis van Gaal has had a year at the club now, he’s settled in, the players know him a lot more,” he told Sky Sports.

“I suppose there is a risk if they bring in five or six new players about how they would adapt to it, but we’ve yet to see that.

“The players that are there will adapt a lot easier this season, they’ve had a year with him, he’s had a year with them and it should be a more comfortable position to start from.”

United, who are priced at 6.00 to win the Premier League, open their campaign against Tottenham and the Red Devils are 1.62 to clinch all three points while Spurs are 5.00 for victory.
