Freddie Ljungberg believes Arsenal’s transfer business during the summer means they are now ready to challenge for the Premier League.
Topping the standings is a feat that has eluded the Gunners since Ljungberg and his fellow ‘Invincibles’ stormed to glory in 2003-04.
This has led to plenty of criticism of boss Arsene Wenger due to his frugality in the market, something he has often attributed to the club’s off-field financial situation following their move to the Emirates Stadium.
However, the Frenchman has been more productive over the last few months, heavily strengthening the spine of his team by splashing out on the signings of Shkodran Mustafi, Granit Xhaka and Lucas Perez.
All three have added quality and perhaps more importantly; depth to the squad. Following a mixed start, they have won their last three Premier League games but face a tough task in their bid to continue that run when they meet Chelsea on Saturday.
Arsenal are 2.40 to win the match, with the Blues 3.00 and the draw priced at 3.40. Ljungberg, who currently coaches the club’s under-16s, admits he has been impressed by Wenger’s patience and having finished second last term, feels they could now be ready to take the next step.
“He’s shown he’s a great manager and I think he’s been restricted a bit on the financial side in the past,” he told Sky Sports News HQ.
“They were second last year and this year hopefully we can win it. “I think some people wanted some signings in the summer but everyone knows English clubs have a lot of money at the moment and if you ask for a player they raise the prices. “He managed to get the players in the end.”
Arsenal are the 13.00 fourth favourites to win the title, with Manchester City currently leading the betting at 1.62.
