Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini has a back injury and will be out until the New Year.

The Belgian, who followed David Moyes from Everton to Old Trafford over the summer, has been absent since the 1-0 home defeat to his former club on December 4.

It was hoped that Fellaini would shake the problem off without serious treatment, but with the niggling problem causing him to miss out on a busy Christmas period of fixtures, Moyes has decided that enough is enough, and has elected to send him for another scan.

Fellaini has also needed a wrist operation for some time, but has been putting it off to stay in contention for a place in the side. If the scan reveals that the back injury requires more time off, this will give him the time needed to put things right.

Moyes said: “Fellaini has an injury to his back, which we hoped might have healed up but it hasn’t.

“I am going to get another scan and if it hasn’t healed up then I might need to take the decision to get his wrist done as well.

“We hoped his back would be better in 10 days but he is still feeling it.”

Fellaini will therefore miss upcoming Premier League fixtures away to Hull and Norwich, and perhaps more importantly, the big games against Spurs on January 1 and Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on January 19.
