Everton are ready to resist all offers for Seamus Coleman amid speculation Manchester United are lining up a bid.

United boss Louis van Gaal has been tipped to move for the defender after seemingly missing out on Nathaniel Clyne, who is on the verge of a move to Liverpool from Southampton, and Dani Alves, who ended speculation over his future by inking a new deal with Barcelona.

The Old Trafford outfit will reportedly test Everton’s resolve with a bid in the region of £20million for Coleman, who signed a five-year deal with the Merseyside outfit last summer.

The Liverpool Echo have poured cold water over United’s chances of signing Coleman, however, as they say the Blues are ready to rebuff any offers for the 26-year-old.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez did come under pressure at times last season but the report claims the board are ready to back the manager and keep Coleman at the club.

United are now set to turn their attentions elsewhere as Van Gaal bids to strengthen his defence, although Uruguayan Guillermo Varela could be given a chance to stake a claim for first-team football during pre-season.

Varela, 22, is yet to make a United appearance after joining the club in 2013, but he did manage 33 league appearances for Spanish side Real Madrid’s second string Real Madrid Castilla last season during a loan stint.

Everton host newly promoted Watford in the first round of Premier League fixtures and they’re 1.73 to take all three points, while United are 1.62 to down Spurs in their opener.
