Roberto Martinez admits he was delighted with Everton’s performance in Saturday’s 4-0 friendly win away at Swindon.

A Kevin Mirallas brace, plus further strikes from new signing Gerard Deulofeu and youngster Conor McAleny saw the Toffees claim an impressive win at the County Ground.

Martinez fielded almost two different line-ups in either half, with Deulofeu and fellow recent arrival Tom Cleverley both impressing.

The only negative was the sight of midfielder Muhamed Besic limping off with a knock, which will be assessed on Sunday to see if he is fit to take part in the upcoming pre-season trip to Singapore.

Following a fine first season in charge at Goodison Park, the Spaniard failed to inject the same pace and verve into his side’s play last term and they eventually had to settle for 11th in the final standings.

However, with no Europa League to worry about, things should be much easier for the Toffees this time around as they prepare to host newly-promoted Watford on the opening day, a game they are 1.70 to win, with the draw 3.60 and the Hornets 5.00.

Martinez admits he was pleased with his side’s display on Saturday and is confident they will be able to further improve during their trip to the Far East.

He told Everton TV: “The sharp end at this stage of the pre-season is not usual to see, so that’s why I was pleased. That sharpness was there straight away.

“All in all, there were many, many good aspects. Now we need to get a little bit more understanding between us and make sure we can be as clinical as we can, and have the right attitude which is what you need.”
