Manager Claudio Ranieri felt Leicester’s style of football was well suited to the Champions League after they opened with a comprehensive win over Club Brugge.

The Premier League champions were rarely in danger once Mark Albrighton had opened the scoring after five minutes in Belgium.

Riyad Mahrez added a sumptuous second from a free-kick and the Algerian’s second-half penalty made the points safe for Leicester.

Brugge were unable to offer much in terms of resistance as Leicester remained compact at the back while always threatening on the break.

Ranieri, in charge of his sixth different club in Europe’s elite competition, felt the Foxes were well suited to the Champions League.

“It was important to show the reaction after the Liverpool defeat,” the manager said.

“I said we cannot think about the Champions League, it’s an experience for us and we hope to go through the group and play again.

“If we don’t achieve the first two positions, we’ll go in the Europa League, that’s our desire to continue in Europe although the Champions League is better.

“Now we play the first match, there are another five. We played our style.

They tried to find a right solution, but it was very difficult. It was good for us to start our story with a victory.” Leicester have assumed top spot in Group G after Porto were held at home by Copenhagen in the group’s other game.

The Foxes play their maiden home Champions League home encounter against the Portuguese outfit in two weeks.

Burnley are due at the King Power Stadium this weekend in the Premier League, with Leicester 1.53 to win the clash, while Burnley are 6.00 and the draw is 4.50.
