Sunderland are believed to be lining up former Everton and Manchester United manager David Moyes to replace Sam Allardyce.

The current Black Cats boss is expected to be confirmed as successor to Roy Hodgson as England manager after the FA indicated he was their preferred choice to lead the Three Lions into the 2018 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Allardyce took charge of Sunderland in a 3-0 pre-season friendly win against Hartlepool United on Wednesday, after which he is said to have informed his players that he has been selected to become England’s next manager.

With the new Premier League season creeping ever closer, Sunderland are keen to put the issue to rest as quickly as possible.

The club have expressed their anger at the length of time taken by the FA to appoint a new manager and they have reassured supporters they are now doing everything in their power to ensure a swift conclusion.

Black Cats chairman Ellis Short is believed to be negotiating a compensation package that will see Allardyce released to the FA.

“Naturally we are aware of the intense media speculation, however, at the present time Sam Allardyce remains Sunderland manager,” read a club statement.

“We share in the anger and frustration of our supporters and would like to assure them that we are working to conclude the matter in the best interests of Sunderland AFC.”

Moyes, meanwhile, is eager to return to management after leaving Spanish side Real Sociedad last November.

The Scot was linked with the Stadium of Light job in the past, including when Allardyce replaced Dick Advocaat at the helm nine months ago.

Moyes has a wealth of Premier League experience under his belt having provided genuine stability during his 12 years at Everton before a brief unsuccessful spell at Old Trafford as successor to Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sunderland are 3.75 to be relegated from the Premier League next season.
