Newcastle defender Daryl Janmaat is confident his side can rediscover their best form after a month of uncertainty at St James’ Park.

The likes of Papiss Cisse, Cheick Tiote and Moussa Sissoko were all linked with January exits but all three remained at the club and there was also speculation over who would take over as manager following Alan Pardew’s move to Crystal Palace.

Newcastle have now confirmed that John Carver will stay in charge of the side until the end of the season, and Janmaat feels a new sense of stability will allow the club to push for a top 10 finish.

He told the Chronicle: “We can put our minds at rest now. We know what we have here and who is the head coach. That’s better for the team.

“We hope to put a run together now after Hull. A run like before Christmas is what we are hoping for. If we can get that we can finish in the season in good fashion.

“The top 10 is the main target we have to reach. Stoke is a good game for us at home then Crystal Palace away [on Wednesday]. They are good games to take some points.”

Newcastle are currently 11th in the Premier League table but they will move up to 10th if they see off Stoke on Sunday as the Potters are one place and two points above Janmaat’s side in the standings.

Newcastle are 2.25 to take all three points on Sunday, a draw is 3.20 and the Potters are 3.19 to come out on top.
