Veteran defender Brede Hangeland has signed a new one-year deal with Crystal Palace.

The 33-year-old former Norway international joined the Eagles 12 months ago from Fulham following the Cottagers’ relegation to the Championship.

Hangeland, who had spent six seasons at Craven Cottage, made 17 appearances for Palace last term and scored two goals to help the side finish in the top half of the Premier League, 13 points above the relegation zone.

Hangeland, who played 91 times for his country, told the Eagles’ website that he was more than happy to have extended his stay with the club.

“I’m delighted to have signed with Crystal Palace for the new season,” the experienced defender said. “I have really enjoyed working under Alan Pardew and we have a very talented squad who are all a really good bunch of lads to be around.

“These are very exciting times at the club and I look forward to playing a part in making next year in another successful one.”

Palace boss Pardew will be looking to build on last season’s achievement of a 10th-placed finish having been tempted to leave Newcastle for the Eagles midway through last season.

The former Reading, Southampton, Charlton and West Ham manager, who also guided Palace to the fifth round of the FA Cup, saw his side pick up impressive Premier League wins over Tottenham, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Palace are 6.50 to be relegated from the Premier League next season.
