Chelsea boss Antonio Conte believes the club must sign a new defender before the close of the transfer window.

The Italian maintained his 100 percent record since taking over the reins at Stamford Bridge this summer, as he watched his side come from behind to beat Watford 2-1 at Vicarage Road on Saturday.

After the match, the former Juventus boss highlighted the fact that his side, who have conceded in both league games so far this season, need to add another defender to their squad, as they currently only have five defenders on their books, including academy player Ola Aina.

Conte said: “If you look now at our squad, we have only five defenders – four that started today and an academy player Ola Aina.

Ola is very good – he has great potential – but with any young player you must work to put them in the first team. Sure, he has a good future.

“If one defender is injured or banned, then we are in trouble, but the club and me we know this and we are talking every day to improve the squad.”

The 47-year-old insists he does not want to panic buy during the remaining weeks of the transfer window, and he will only sign a player that fits the club’s profile.

He continued: “We know that this market is very difficult. It’s crazy. I don’t want to buy only to buy.

I want to buy the right profile for Chelsea, the right investment for the solution and for the future.”

Chelsea are next in action when they take on Bristol Rovers in the EFL Cup on Tuesday, and they are priced at 1.15 to win the match, while the League One outfit are on offer at 15.00 and the draw is available at 7.00.
