Celtic coach Brendan Rodgers is confident his squad will still be full of confidence despite Scotland’s players returning after a disappointing international break.

Gordon Strachan’s men had been hoping to pick up plenty of points last week but they were left with just one after two disappointing performances.

Scotland were held to a 1-1 draw by Lithuania last Saturday, with James McCarthur scoring a late equaliser to rescue a point.

Strachan’s side were then comfortably beaten 3-0 by Slovakia away from home and the result leaves Scotland under immense pressure to qualify for the 2018 World Cup.

Former Celtic coach Strachan has confirmed he will stay with the squad and Rodgers insists his players should bounce back for their club.

Forward Leigh Griffiths came on as a substitute during both games, while left-back Kieran Tierney played against Slovakia. Winger James Forrest played as a sub against Lithuania while goalkeeper Craig Gordon was on the bench for both matches.

All four returned to training ahead of the clash against Motherwell on Saturday and Rodgers believes they will still return in good spirits.

He told The National: “I am sure they were disappointed but I always say to the players who go away to play with their international team, just worry about your international team, don’t worry about Celtic. “Go away, give your best to the coaches and managers to be the best you can for your country.

“When you come back to here, only worry about Celtic. When you drive up through Lennoxtown and through the gates, the focus goes to Celtic and they come into an ambience where the spirit is really high.

“It is a good environment to come to and they just slotted back in this morning and trained very well.”
