Brendan Rodgers says Celtic must become more ruthless despite booking their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup on Wednesday.

Two late goals from James Forrest and Moussa Dembele were enough to give the Bhoys a 2-0 win over League One side Alloa, on what looked like it could be a frustrating evening at Parkhead.

Rodgers’ men had previously been thwarted by a string of fine saves from Alloa goalkeeper Neil Parry, much to the annoyance of the boss.

Next up is Kilmarnock at home on Saturday, a game Celtic are 1.14 to win, with the draw 8.00 and Killie 15.00.

Victory would see the Bhoys extend their unbeaten start to the Scottish Premiership, with them already the clear 1.07 favourites to win a sixth straight title, while local rivals Rangers are their nearest challengers at 9.00.

Despite his side progressing on Wednesday, Rodgers was left far from impressed and says his players must become more ruthless in front of goal.

“I wasn’t pleased at half-time,” the 43-year-old said. “We have to be more clinical than that. “We had 13 shots on target and probably another 13 which weren’t on target so to score only the two goals was disappointing.

You have to be more ruthless than that. “The name of the game was being patient but we needed to be much better. Credit to Alloa to come here and defend the way they did and play the way they did was fantastic.

He added: “We deserve the credit for the patience but performance-wise we will obviously play much better.”
