Ilkay Gundogan appears to have had a change of heart after talks with new Borussia Dortmund coach Thomas Tuchel and looks set to stay at Signal Iduna Park, according to his agent.
There has been plenty of speculation over the future of the Germany international, fuelled by the player himself after he said that he would not be signing a contract extension, with his current deal set to run out in 2016.
Manchester United, Arsenal, Barcelona, Juventus and Bayern Munich have reportedly been among the possible suitors for the 24-year-old but it now seems likely that those clubs will be disappointed as Gundogan is ready to sign a new deal at BVB.
Ilhan Gundogan, the player’s uncle and agent, told Suddeutsche
Zeitung: “If you had asked me last week I would have said that Ilkay will certainly leave Dortmund this summer, but now it is clearly an option to sign a new contract at Borussia.”
Speaking about talks with new boss Tuchel, he added: “This was a very good discussion. Tuchel’s plans for Borussia are so exciting that Ilkay is pondering them at the moment.”
Gundogan is now set to re-open negotiations with Dortmund, on offer at 13.00 to reclaim the Bundesliga title, when he returns from holiday next weekend.
Ilhan went on to refute claims that excessive wage demands were the cause obstacle to a move to Bundesliga champions, Bayern – the strong 1.08 favourites to defend their crown.
“We did not talk to Bayern about money at all,” Gundogan said. “There was no wage demand from our side. We are in no position to make any demands at a club like Bayern Munich.”
