Gary Bowyer was in an upbeat mood despite Blackburn Rovers going down to a home defeat on the opening day of the new Championship season.
Rovers fell 2-1 to Wolves at Elwood Park, with the visitors benefitting from a seemingly controversial winning goal.
Having had time to reflect on the overall performance, Bowyer saw plenty to take encouragement from as he gears up for a Capital One Cup clash with Shrewsbury Town back at Ewood Park on Tuesday.
Bowyer felt his side had acquitted themselves well with a new style of play against Wolves.
“I was pleased with the chances that we created and some of the football that we played,” Bowyer told Radio Rovers. “We were patient in possession; I thought we made a decent start.
“It was a tremendous effort from the players out there. It is the start of trying to play a different way.”
Rovers started the better start of the two sides but Benik Afobe slotted past David Raya to give Kenny Jackett’s side just before the half hour mark.
An own-goal from David Conway levelled the game up five minutes before the interval but right on half-time midfielder Dave Edwards appeared to divert in Nouha Dicko’s cross with his hand.
The goal was given and Rovers could not get back on terms in the second half.
Bowyer however was content with the chances his team created and said, while disappointed, they will look to build on the performance against Shrewsbury.
“Obviously the players are disappointed because their efforts deserved a lot more than what they got. We’ll debrief the game, look it properly, highlight the positives and build on that,” he added.
Blackburn Rovers are 1.83 to defeat League One outfit Shrewsbury, with the visitors 4.20 and the draw 3.50.
