Manchester United face an anxious wait ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Bayern Munich as Wayne Rooney is a doubt with a toe injury.

The forward suffered the blow during the Red Devils’ heroic 1-1 draw against the European champions on Tuesday evening and will miss Saturday’s trip to Newcastle with the problem, a game United are 2.05 to win, with the Magpies priced at 3.66 and the draw 3.46.

Although he has only scored twice in Europe this season, Rooney has again been the talisman for his side and with Robin van Persie unavailable for the match, a further injury problem would only give boss David Moyes more selection headaches.

United go into the match at the Allianz Arena as huge underdogs and that is reflected in the outright betting as they are currently 30.00 to lift the title, with only Borussia Dortmund less fancied.

However, throughout his career Rooney has shown a real determination to recover from injury, with him famously returning to fitness at the same stage against the German giants in 2010, having previously been ruled out of the second leg after suffering a blow to his ankle in the first match.

Moyes admits things currently don’t look good, but says the medical staff will be doing everything they can to ensure the England man is ready for the trip to Germany. “He’s got a badly bruised toe. He’s got a terrible toe,” he told MUTV. “Not only is it a problem for this (Newcastle) game, it could be a problem for the Munich match.

“We need to monitor it. We’ll get him treatment all over the weekend and see if we can speed it up.”
