Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone has described his side’s Champions League semi-final success over Bayern Munich as ‘unbelievable’.
Atleti advanced through to the final by virtue of the away goals rule, with their 1-0 victory in the first-leg at the Vicente Calderon proving crucial following their 2-1 loss in Munich on Tuesday.
The Rojiblancos are now through to their second final in three years, and they will be looking to secure their first title in Europe’s premier club competition, following their extra-time defeat to city neighbours Real Madrid in 2014.
Real could once again be Atletico’s opponents in this year’s final, as they prepare to face Manchester City in the second-leg of their semi-final tie on Wednesday, but Simeone was not thinking that far ahead as he was too pleased with the way his side performed over both legs against Bayern.
He said: “I really have to say we played against the best team I have faced in my whole career. It was unbelievable how they played. It’s unbelievable what we have achieved.”
The Argentine was particularly pleased with the defensive resilience his side showed, a characteristic that has become synonymous with his team in recent years.
He added: “We achieved our goal, we have seen that we are a very strong team, but we were really good defensively.”
Atleti are available at 2.00 to clinch their maiden Champions League crown in the San Siro on May 28, while Real Madrid are on offer at 2.50 and Manchester City are priced at 6.00.
