Andrea Barzagli says Juventus’ 4-0 win over Cagliari on Wednesday has set the standard for his side in their Serie A title defence.
The Bianconeri went down 2-1 to Inter Milan in Sunday’s Derby d’Italia and were criticised for their attitude following an uncharacteristically slack performance.
However, strikes from Daniele Rugani, Gonzalo Higuain and Dani Alves saw them head in 3-0 up at the break on Wednesday, before a late own goal from defender Luca Ceppitelli completed the rout.
Following Sunday’s poor showing, Barzagli says Juve’s performance against Cagliari has set a standard they need to maintain for the remainder of the campaign.
Massimiliano Allegri’s men have won the Serie A title in each of the last five seasons, with their success often built on defence.
Barzagli admits Juventus had a point to prove against the Sardinians and believes they succeeded in showing both themselves and their rivals just how strong they can be.
“We entered the pitch fired up and with desire to play, which is what we missed against Inter,” the defender told Sky Sport Italia.
“We also sent a signal to ourselves. If we attack and we go forward, we can have fun. “If we take everything for granted, nothing will come of it.
We’re happy, even if we didn’t achieve anything. “We know that in Italy, whoever wins has the best defence. We want to continue like this.”
Saturday sees Juve travel to Sicily to take on struggling Palermo. The Old Lady are currently the 1.30 favourites to win, with the draw 5.00 and the Rosanero priced at 10.00.
