Adnan Januzaj says he wants to stay and fight for his future at Manchester United after hitting the winner in Friday’s 1-0 win at Aston Villa.

The Belgian winger was surprisingly named in the starting line-up by boss Louis van Gaal and it paid off as he struck the only goal in the first half, via the aid of a deflection, to make it two wins out of two for United in the Premier League this season.

The 20-year-old has been linked with a move to Sunderland in the last week but, following his goal against Villa, he insists he wants to stay at Old Trafford.

“Obviously (I’m) feeling good after scoring the goal, obviously I’ve not had a game for a long time so my match fitness is not so good but I’m happy to score for the team and score the winner,” he said.

“I hope to have more games and hopefully score more goals.”

Januzaj has often been overlooked by Van Gaal and it was thought the Dutch coach was open to letting him go out on loan this season, but the youngster says he pays no attention to speculation.

“It’s only rumours, I am happy here and of course I am going to fight for my place,” he added.

However, his future remains uncertain as Van Gaal was coy on Januzaj’s situation after the game and was critical of his overall performance at Villa Park.

He said: “You have to wait until we have closed the transfer period. That’s my benefit of this period. I am pleased with the goal because it was a wonderful goal but you have to do more than scoring a goal and that was less good than the goal.”

United are next in action in the league next Saturday when they host Newcastle in the early kick-off. Van Gaal’s side are 1.36 to win, Newcastle are 8.50 and the draw is 4.50.
