England batsman Jonathan Trott is hoping that squad can continue to build momentum as they prepare for Champion Trophy finals and the Ashes series.

England were inconsistent in the group stage of the Champions Trophy, but eventually started to show a bit more class when seeing off against South Africa in the semi-final.

Some impressive bowling saw the hosts put themselves in a commanding position, sending South Africa packing for 175 and taking a seven-wicket victory.

Trott was the stand-out man with the bat in the game at The Oval, hitting an impressive 82 and he believes that the form of the whole squad has improved as confidence has grown over the summer.

The 32-year-old admits that although there are no guarantees, it bodes well for the opening Ashes test match Trent Bridge in less than a month, revealing it would be the perfect preparation.

Trott said: “I hope we are peaking. There’s a lot of cricket left this summer, and I hope it will be a great one for England.

“It would be sort of having your cake and eating it. It is an amazing opportunity to play five games and win a Champions Trophy.”

He added: “We deserve to be in the final. We have played some good cricket, under pressure as well. India are a fantastic team, so we have to play our A-game.”
