Wales have been boosted by the news Alex Cuthbert could make a return to action when Australia visit the Millennium Stadium this weekend.

The British and Irish Lions wing has been on the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury while playing for the Cardiff Blues and was expected to miss the autumn series.

However, the 23-year-old is back with the Wales squad and is being assessed ahead of the clash with the Wallabies.

Blues director of rugby Phil Davies has confirmed that Cuthbert has linked up with Wales again after making a good recovery but is not sure whether he will face Australia.

“He may be involved next week, but I am not sure,” said the Blues boss.

“We are not sure what his actual status is but it is encouraging for us with the Heineken Cup around the corner.”

Cuthbert has been prolific for Wales scoring nine tries in 18 matches and although his return would be a big boost, Wales will not take any chances on him.

The Welsh Rugby Union issued a statement on the matter which read: “The Blues and WRU medical staff have been working closely together to ensure Alex returns to fitness as quickly and safely as possible.

“He will continue to be assessed by the WRU medics this week.”
