Lewis Hamilton believes there are definite similarities between his current Mercedes W04 and McLaren which helped him claim the world title in 2008.

The 28-year-old, who made a controversial switch away from McLaren in September last year, found some real pace out of his Mercedes over the weekend, as he managed to claim his first win of the 2013 campaign at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday.

A three-week break for the teams has almost come at the wrong time for the Englishman, who is now hoping to close down the 48-point gap on Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel in the world drivers’ championship.

Hamilton will have to wait until August 25 before he will line-up on the grid against his rivals at the Belgian Grand Prix, but in the meantime the former McLaren ace is focusing on making further progress with his Mercedes.

The Brackley outfit have given the talented driver a car that has the potential to push Vettel all the way for the championship and Hamilton feels the W04 could be the best F1 car he has raced in and rivals his McLaren from five years ago.

He was quoted in The Independent: “The Mercedes is different to other cars I’ve driven. It’s one of the best.

“The 2008 McLaren was pretty good. I want to say the Mercedes is even better than that.”
