The two fighters met in August where Povetkin knocked out Whyte in just 30 seconds into the fifth round. Before the defeat, Whyte had been the undisputed challenger for the WBC title.<\/p>\n<p>That position means that he would have faced the winner of the Fury vs. Wilder III fixture. Tyson Fury is currently the holder of the title after beating Deontay Wilder back in February. Due to a mandatory fight clause, he would be facing Wilder again. The winner of that fight would get to keep the belt and that is who Whyte would have challenged.<\/p>\n<p>Following the defeat, Povetkin emerged as the challenger and all would have been settled by now, except that Whyte forced a mandatory rematch that was in the original contract of the first fight. That fight has now been scheduled to hold on November 21. Whyte&#8217;s promoter, Eddie Hearn, is quite optimistic that his fighter would win and once that happens, Whye can become the challenger again.<\/p>\n<p>But facts have now emerged showing that neither Povetkin nor Whyte is guaranteed a fight against the winner of Fury vs. Wilder III for the WBC title. Whyte was promised the fight by the WBC after waiting more than 1000 days and he has lost that position now, passing it to Povetkin. Whatever happens on November 21 does not guarantee a shot for the WBC title.<\/p>\n<p>This is also since Fury and Joshua have contenders to beat before their unification match sometime next year. Another fact is that the winner of Fury vs. Wilder III would not have to defend their title for at least one year. And within that space, a unification match for all belts would have occured.
